When you think of gourmet caramel apples, you think of gooey sweetness and crunch on a stick. But did you know that these delicious treats can actually help you lose weight?
They only have about 28 grams of sugar each, and that's about the same amount you would get if you ate a six-ounce serving of strawberry-flavored yogurt. In fact, we did some digging and discovered that these delicious treats are actually a healthy snack.
Did you know…
While a diet high in fiber has many benefits, it can help you lose weight. “High-fiber foods generally require more chewing time, which gives your body time to register when you're no longer hungry, so you're less likely to overeat,” states the article, “Dietary fiber: Essential for a healthy diet” from the Mayo Clinic.
“Also, a high-fiber diet tends to make a meal feel larger and linger longer, so you stay full for a greater amount of time. And high-fiber diets also tend to be less ‘energy dense,’ which means they have fewer calories for the same volume of food.”
When foods have high levels of saturated fats, they tend to be high in calories and cause other, health issues. But caramel contains minimal fat, no saturated fat or cholesterol. Plus, they only have about 160 calories per serving, depending on the size of the apple.
“Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood,” states an article from The American Heart Association. “High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.” And who wants to deal with that?!
Caramel apples are a delicious treat that remind us of fun, childhood activities. But instead of just giving them to the kids, it’s time to enjoy them as an adult too!
As it turns out, caramel apples can actually help you lose weight. Rather than grabbing ice cream, candy, or another fatty, high-calorie snack, reach for a caramel apple instead. It will help you fill-up with fiber and carbohydrates, and give you the energy you need to have a more active, and healthier lifestyle.
