According to the article, “16 Surprising Statistics About Small Business” in Forbes, “approximately 543,000 new businesses get started each month (but more employer businesses shut down than start up each month).”

While it is a lot of work, many people make their small-business dreams a reality. What are the secrets to success? Here are some tips I’d like to share with you from my entrepreneurial journey growing Tastee Apple over the last forty years…

7 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Business

1. Do you have passion for what you are doing?

You are going to spend many hours starting and growing your new business. Is it something you like to do? Does the potential end-result make you happy and everything worthwhile? This driving passion will keep you going when times get tough. If you don’t have it, you need to reconsider what you are doing.

 2. Are you a good listener?

Although you may be starting a business to fulfill your personal dreams, success comes from listening to others and providing a product or service that help them. Plus, you need to listen to your employees, investors, partners, and more to ensure that their needs are met, create new ideas and to discover issues before they escalate into major problems.

3. Are you willing to let go?

While you may want to micro-manage every aspect of your business, you need to let go. Hire responsible, smart people who are experts in a particular area, and let them do their best. Then, you can focus on your core responsibilities effectively.

4. Do you treat others with respect?

While you may own the business, it takes a team of people to make it a success. Listen to others carefully and let them know you respect their opinions and feedback. Then, use this information to help create better products and services, boost morale, increase productivity, and more. Value others and work with them to earn mutual respect.

5. Do you have a positive attitude?

If you run around with a worried frown on your face and complain, you will not create a positive, working environment. Try to smile and look at the good side of things, no matter how bad your day may be. The people you work with will respond to your attitude, and it will spread throughout the organization.

6. Are you determined to succeed?

When someone gives you a “No” for an answer, re-evaluate the situation. What do you need to change with your products and services to turn that response into a “Yes”? By obtaining input from customers and looking at things in a different way, you can improve your products and services and give your target market more of what they want and need. Look at a “No” as a way to move ahead, not as an excuse to stop.

7. Do you have a good, work-life balance?

While you may think you need to spend 24 hours-a- day on your business, you don’t. You need time to rest, relax and enjoy life. Also, time away from work allows you to think differently about what you are doing, generate new ideas and re-energize mentally and physically. These are all necessary things to have a thriving business.

It’s possible to create and grow a successful business!

While everyone is not “cut out” to be an entrepreneur, if you have the passion to work hard, listen to others, incorporate new ideas, and the drive to succeed, you can create and grow a successful business. Are you ready? Go for it!
